Signing
I've been working on it with her.  However, I wasn't heavily using it like I did for her brother.  So, she really doesn't sign anything yet.

FOOD!
She may be tiny and she may not have any teeth, but Edyn LOVES to eat! She tries to eat just about everything. She eats just about anything we give her.  Including onions, jalepanos, tomatos, peaches, triscuits, bread (she LOVES 100% whole wheat bread), mini wheats, cheese, the list goes on...
There are a few things she doesn't eat to often: She does not like eating bananas unless they are completely mushed up.  She refused to eat them whole.
We're (I'm) limiting her on the sweets that she eats.  She will get chocolate or some other type of sweet on a VERY limited basis.  I also rarely give her juice.  After learning with Strummer on how much he LOVES juice (and thinking back to how much I gave it to him), I decided for Edyn that she will get juice on more of a special occasion basis. I'm hoping she won't have a juice-dependence a year from now!

What She Is Wearing!
*12 month clothing - all though she can still fit into some 6-9, depending on the brand
*Size 2 diapers - I had her in size 3 for a bit b/c that's what i had on hand and she SWAM in them :P
*Accessories - headbands, barrettes, and hairbands for tiny pigtails and ponytails (started at 11 months)

Other Fun Facts!
She crawls like a crazy-girl, and will cruise about everywhere. If you hold onto a hand or if she's on a walking toy, she goes turbo-speed! She'll stand on her own for about 30 sec or so and has taken about 3 steps 4 different times.

She LOVES to dance! If she hears music - no matter where it's from - tv, cd, phone, activity table she starts to dance! It's hilarious. There's an inner-groove in her!

She loves to be have things organized.  She will pick up toys and will move objects from one storage basket to another.  Edyn also likes having things in a particular order!
She hasn't started milk yet. I have her on the Enfa-Grow (stage 2) for extra nutrients. She doesn't have teeth yet, so I have gone all out on her eating EVERYTHING. All though, she does eat quite a bit. She gets upset if we're eating something and she's not.

She likes being around people and likes getting her picture taken. I know, I have a diva-in-training. The last 2 times we have taken pics w/my friend Sarah (a professional) she turns on this 'mode'. As Sarah said, she has this 'it' factor. That she rarely see's w/all the kids she's photographed :P

Teeth are there - somewhere, just not noticable quite yet!

Incase you're curious, here's Strummer post of his 1-year accomplishments!

Here are a few pics from her 1-year photo shoot by the fabulous Sarah Moore!

A Note For the Birthday Girl!

First Time Holding My Little Girl

This past year - well really, the past year-and-a-half has been just a whirlwind of a blur!

We first start out August 2009.  I wasn't feeling the best for a good month, and was wondering why I couldn't shake this nauseating feeling.  I decided, to make myself feel better, I would take a pregnancy test - just incase.  Figuring, it would just be negative.  (Since I was nursing and on birth control)
Now, to make things even more fun, I was heading up to Algona that day w/Strummer because my dad's company was having a special  Celebration and I was going to help my sister, Erika out at her booth for The Chocolate Season at the Kossuth County Fair.

As you may know, the test turned to be POSITIVE, I had an ultrasound the following week and found out I was already 8 weeks! WOW!  Between not finding out until my 3rd month, Edyn coming 2-1/2 weeks early and having random trips to the hospital for early contractions,  this has gone by so fast!

To our Itty-Bitty Princess:

You are truly a blessing from God.  You were unexpected and we were in shock when we found out you were on your way! We couldn't ask for a better daughter, and we know God has special plan for you.  We thank Him for creating you! Your personality has just blossomed over the past few months.  You love seeing people and try to capture people's attention.  You love being around your family.  You like playing w/Bosco and he lets you do whatever you want and he doesn't care.  You have fun with your brother.  I think he realizes the older you get, the more fun you have become.  Strummer likes making you laugh and likes sharing his food.

You have such an expressive personality and your big brown eyes draw people in.  You love to laugh, smile, eat and figuring things out.  You enjoy exploring and finding new things to play with.  You Love-Love-Love Music! You break out into a dance on about any type of music you hear. Whether it's on TV with a theme song, a commercial or a song on a show.  It could be from one of your many music-making toys.  Or even on a phone! You love to groove and we look forward to how you will 'grow into' your dancing!

You seem to be on your way of being a very detailed and ordered little girl.  You enjoy putting things away and taking an object to one basket, then to another basket, then taking it back to the original basket.

You have us wrapped around your little-bitty finger! We love how you get SO excited about everything! I love how you become full of smiles when daddy gets home from work or when I  come get you at Child Watch after I'm done working at the Y.

Daddy and Mommy love you very much! This year has gone by SO fast! We can't wait to see how you grow up, see what new things you learn and figure out and we pray you will grow in to a girl who loves her family, her friends and loves God!

(A side note ~ I really need to start and FINISH blog posts on the same day! 2 weeks later it's done...)

Happy 'labor' Day!

I know what you're thinking...'Manda - Labor Day is in September!' - yes I'm well aware of that, I'm talking about Birth Labor! As in, on this day  yesterday, last year, I went into labor w/our little girl!

Here's what happened

March 8, 2010 - I woke up just feeling 'off'.  Granted, I had off-feeling days throughout the pregnancy, and I figured it was just one of those days...9 months pregnant, you don't feel like yourself.
So, I woke up, I was having very uncomfortable lower back pain and wasn't feeling the best.  I told Brad, he asked if he should stay home, I said, don't worry, go to work.
Brad headed to work - on a SIDE note, Brad teaches at a school 40-45 min away from where we live.  Last year, Brad carpooled w/someone...and you guessed it, it happened to be the week for Joy to drive.  Brad told me later that he KNEW he should have just driven himself that day - he just 'had that feeling'

Going on - I got myself ready for work - I.E. throw on comphy pants and a sweatshirt to go work at the Y, got Strummer (who was 16 months old) dressed and off we went to the Y! I remember that I didn't do to much that day.  I kept on having to go pee, but when I did, it was clear.  I was still having lower back pain, so I was texting Brad what was going on - who then, was talking w/some of his co-workers on what was going on.  Then one of his co-workers who's room is right next to his - Yvonne Dewein (who by-the-way, USED to live in Algona with her husband who was my sisters' HS choir director - crazy how that works!) and she told brad that she was pretty sure i was in the early stages of labor! Brad relayed that info to me.  All this time - I was talking w/some of MY co-workers on how I was feeling and they thought it would be a good idea to call my doctor.  So - when Brad texted (or called, can't remember - we did both that morning) about whas Yvonne said, he URGED me to call Dr. Parsons to see what I should do.  Seeing - that he was A: At work - so they would need to find a sub  B: He was 45 min away   C: he would need to call his dad (who lives in downtown Des Moines) to come and pick him up at school to take him to Boone!

On a side-note - I was induced with Strummer.  So, I really had NO clue and how you felt or what happens when you go into labor naturally.

Around 11, I call Amy (my doctor's nurse) - tell her what's going on and after giving her my gut feeling - she said - better come to the hospital just to make sure! Then my list of calling started - first, called Brad saying find a sub and call your dad so he can come home, then called Trisha - my first person I talked to about watching Strummer if I happened to go into labor during the week - and she was busy, then called Shannon - my back-up, she was busy...hmm, what was I going to do w/my 16-month old son?? I was being slightly frantic because I knew it would not be good to take him with me.  Plus, I do remember child watch was going to be closing soon.  Then THANKFULLY my fabulous co-workers at the Y (I remember Mindy, Danielle, possibly Amy), said - just leave him here.  We'll watch him until Brad gets into town! THANK YOU!

So - I ran home, grabbed my bag (which I mostly had packed - did forget some things), my computer and camera and headed to the hospital  and at 11:20am, I checked myself in the Labor & Delivery.  They had me hooked up to monitors to track my contractions and then had to 'check' me.  I was have progressive contractions and at a 1-1/2.  An hour or so had passed and I was at a 3 - and in Boone, they'll officially put you as being 'in labor'.  So - the calling of other family members began!  I'm pretty sure Brad was w/me by the time I was officially in labor.  So - Brad called his mom to see when she would be able to come, so she could watch Strummer.  In the mean time, Paul (Brad's dad) watched him. I called my mom telling her the good news.  Which here is another funny thing.  My parents were just down on Sunday for a visit.  I had told them how my appointment had gone (which I think was on Friday).  I remember discussing that Dr. Parsons didn't think it would be anytime soon, because there wasn't to much progession 'down there'.  We even talked about trying to get the contrations started up at my next appointment since my parents were leaving for Hawaii the week Edyn was due! When I had called my mom - I asked her to guess where I was.  I think she guessed the hospital.  Then I said - your granddaughter will be arriving soon, when will you be able to come?  Then I called my siblings and I'm sure Brad called his siblings.  The last person I called was the Super Nurse Tera! She is one awesome friend.  She was the nurse that we had while delivering Strummer at Mary Greeley.  We had a good connection and was re-connected through Facebook (along w/a couple other nurses) and then again when she started coming to the Y! Well - when she found out I was pregnant, she asked if I'll be going back to MGMC.  I said sadly no, I was going to deliver in Boone - and the reason I was so sad is because I wouldn't have her!  Then she said, you give me a call when you're in labor and I'll try and make it to be there for you! Doesn't she just rock?? Well - she had texted me back saying she was working that day, but if I was still in labor when she was done working, then she would come.  Tera also was texting me encouraging words on her breaks! Thanks Tera!

Then we had - the waiting game...Brad and I watched a lot of The Office.  I do remember one of the nurses didn't think of was going to be staying because I looked 'to comfortable'.  I said I take pain well - to a point.  So - we waited and waited and waited....my parents came....and we waited (you see where I'm getting at).  Now it was the evening - the contractions were getting harder, but I was staying at a 3! Impossible! I walked, I did the whirlpool, and nothing was helping.  THEN - the dreaded Back Labor came into play! Believe me ladies - back labor pain is worse than contraction pain! This was around 10ish - I think I dealt w/it for about an hour or so.  During this time, Tera called me saying she was done w/work and wondering if I was A: Still in Labor and B: If I wanted her to come and see me.  Yes and Yes!  (and she had just worked a 12 hr day at MGMC - and then came to boone at nearly 11pm!)   Also - since it seemed like it would be awhile til Little Miss wanted to make her arrival - my parents headed to their hotel and get some rest.

Meanwhile - I'm in unbearable pain because of the back labor, contractions are 2 minutes apart and I'm not doing well.  Finally I decided to get an epidural.  I REALLY thought I could manage without it.  I guess not.  I remember being in SO much pain and it being hard to think straight and not being at all comfortable.  It seemed to take FOREVER for the epidural guy to come.  At this point, it was around midnight or later.  Tera came in around the same time I was receiving the epidural.  After a 1/2 hour or so, it starts kicking in and I'm feeling relatively better.  I could still feel things, but it just took the edge off.  (Which is what the anesthesiologist likes to have for the epidurals.) Which I found it was better than the epdirual at MGMC.  I couldn't feel A THING when I was in labor with Strummer.
Tera was super helpful in making me feel more comfortalble, helping me find different positions to lay in and when the time came, helped me w/the pushing!

Apparantly - all I really needed for the epidural!  In less than an hour, I went from a 3 to 10! The nurses were extremely surprised! So - once I was getting close, they called Dr. Parsons and she arrived at the hospital just in time! I was ready to push! Lucky me, pushing has been the easy part of my labors! I pushed for 13 minutes and out popped Edyn! (Seeing she was almost 2 lbs smaller than her brother - delivering her was a breeze!)

Edyn Vernette arrived March 9, 2010 at 2:31am! Weighing in at 7 lbs - 1 oz and Measuring at 19-1/2 inches.  She was 2-1/2 weeks early and perfect! She did need a bit of oxygen because her umbilical cord was loose around her neck in the womb (maybe that's why she came early).

I was exhausted, but SO excited!!! Brad was too!

Tera took some GREAT pics of the delivery and afterwards.  She also was so extremely helpful, by going out to McDonalds (the only food place open in boone at 3am) and getting me food. I was STARVING! :P

God suprised us w/this pregnancy and we couldn't be more grateful for His gift of our precious little girl!

Thanks to EVERYONE who helped us while we were in the hospital and who helped us while I was pregnant and during this past year! We Love You All!!

During Labor - since it was a surprise going early - I didn't get one last belly pic!
(I can tell you, I was measuring 46 inches around)
Welcome Edyn Vernette!

Almost 1 year old!

I LOVE Rock-A-Thigh Baby Socks!

Thanks to the wonderful world of Facebook, I found a FABULOUS new product! gDiapers was having a giveaway, in conjuntion with Rock-A-Thigh Baby socks.  I didn't win the giveaway - however decided since there was a 15% discount for the socks, I decided it would be well worth buying a couple pairs of socks for Miss Edyn.
So, I went and did a better investigation of the RTB website and was loving what I was seeing.  Not only are they reasonably priced at $14/pair, there is also FREE shipping! How sweet is that?
What led me to the decision of purchasing these socks is because I was constantly having to combine socks AND leggings for Edyn when we went out.  Her jeans didn't stay down as I was carrying her outside and being it is super cold in the winter, I wasn't a fan of her legs being bare.  Plus she is either pulling her socks off OR they are falling off, even w/the combo.

                   Before RTB
Not to happy about her double-up legging/sock combo
                                     After RTB
Loves that her socks stay on! So happy!

I remember thinking - there HAS to be something out there that will keep Edyn's little feet and legs warm during the frigid winter months.  VIOLA! I found RTB socks about a month later!

Jen, the owner created this company 4 years ago and launched it one 1 year ago! She is a mom of 4 girls and one day, couldn't find thigh-high socks and decided that she needed to create something! She lives in Wisconson, so, she to, wanted to keep her kids legs and feet warm in the winter months.  She also (seems) like a very nice person.  We had been e-mailing back and forth about the socks.  She also has an incentive program where you can e-mail her about different stores that you think would be a good place to sell her socks.  If the store decides to sell them, you will receive 7.5% commission OR free socks! So, I had e-mailed her about this great store in my hometown of Algona called The Market. Kelly sells lots of unique items and I wanted to let Jen know about it.

Well - here is the CRAZY part that made me feel like I 'knew' Jen and had some sort of connection.  When she had read my e-mail saying that I was from Algona, she had e-mailed back, first thanking for recommending her socks to Kelly and to say she lived in Swea City until she was 5! (For those who don't know, Swea City is a 1/2 hour from Algona and both my parents are from Swea City)
Isn't that nuts? So we were 'talking' about Swea City and Algona through a few more e-mails.

Back to my experience w/RTB! I decided to order Pink Polka Dots and Neapolitan. When they arrived just 2 days after I ordered them, I was even MORE happy with how they looked.  In person they look even better than they do online.  I couldn't wait for little miss to try them on.  I decided to order the size 1-2 years, that way, they will fit her for awhile.

The socks have arrived!
Happy about her new socks!

They are super-adorable, they are warm AND they stay up and on! I think Edyn is very happy wearing her RTB socks! Thank you to Jen for creating this WONDERFUL product! I have been telling everyone about them, because I have been so happy with them! Jen is truly a Momopreneur!  Since she has launched her company, you can purchase her socks online and you can find them in 3 different countries! (United States, Canada and Australia)   :D

The socks come in 16 different styles/colors and 6 different sizes! 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years, 2-4 years, 4-6 years, 6-8 years.  Plus, Jen has a design background, so she, herself designs the socks!

TO end - here are my pinpoints on why I think Rock-A-Thigh socks are the best!

  • They are priced right and there is free shipping on the website
  • They are super cute and you have lots of designs to choose from
  • They keep your little one's legs and feet warm
  • They will stay up and babies can't take them off
  • For girls - a great alternative to tights!
  • A lot easier to change a diaper and easier for potty-trainers!
  • Eco-friendly
  • 100% made in the USA
  • It's a great company! 10% of all online sales goes to designated charities!
  • They just ROCK!
They work so well instead of wearing tights!
Happy to be outside, staying warm and looking oober-cute!
Rockin' it out in her pink polk dots
See, they come up to her thigh!
Treads on the bottom - and they are stars! How Cute!

Could you VOTE for our Cute Kids?

Hello Friends and Family!! My fabulous friend who is also a great photographer is having a Cute Kid Contest! Sarah Moore is taking pictures of area kids to enter into a National Charity Model Search - Along with having a contest of her own.  All proceeds benefit a great charity, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

Now - I know we have ADORABLE kids - and really not to concerned on winning the national contest - however it would be fabulous to win the prizes that Sarah Moore Photography is having for the local winners (AKA - the kids who came to get their picture taken from her)

So there are TWO ways to vote! You need to go to the website, Charity Model Search, then go to the 'Gallery'.  There you will find a section where you can search for photos.  So go to 'find a photo', enter our last name into the search box and then hit the drop down box to 'Region 4 (Midwest)'

After that you will see our 2 kids! Click on a photo.  The way you can vote is to donate $1 and that vote will count toward the national contest.  However - if you would like to vote for free - you can go to the star for the People's Choice.  You can give up to 5 stars TOTAL.  So you will need to split them up between the 2 kids.
Or - you could vote both ways!

Honestly - it doesn't matter about the national vote - it's more important for the 'Star' votes.  That is what Sarah is going to use to determine who wins for her Studio contest!

You have til March 31 to vote! So tell your friends, tell your family, tell everyone to vote for the Grout kids!!

Here are the direct links
